I Can Fly!

August 23, 2015 | Blog – When I saw the Groupon for Learning 2 Fly, I knew I had to try this out! I had seen it done a lot in Vegas and knew that it required a lot of upper body strength, something I lacked immensely, but I wanted to try it all the same. Once I entered the building I was in awe of my surroundings. The walls were covered in bright colors as various brightly colored silk ribbons hung from the ceiling under thick bright blue mats. It was so warm and inviting!

I was also given the rules once I entered. The #1 rule is you can’t say the word “can’t” or any other negative words describing your inability to do something. You must always use positive sentences stating that you will improve with practice or you have to do 10 push-ups. My kind of class! Although I learned the rules because I broke the first one right off the bat saying the word “can’t” when trying to figure out how to do the first exercise. You see, everyone else had been taking the class for a while and were able to climb the silk ribbons with little effort. I couldn’t even get off the ground for more than 5 seconds! This was going to be a very long hour….

However, much to my surprise the instructor was kind and took pity of my lack of upper body strength and gave me exercises that I could do. Sweaty immensely as I struggled to get into the first position, I managed to pull myself up and stand within the ribbons! GO ME! I was so excited and proud! I could fly like everyone else after all! She also taught me how to hang upside down, ha! After finding about 3-4 positions that I could do I could easily see how people loved it! Who doesn’t want to fly?! So even though I was nowhere near climbing to the ceiling or doing many of the other positions, my body was stretched and worn out giving me one heck of a workout without putting too much stress on my body. So glad I gave it a try! And I made a few new friends while I was at it. I suggest you try to fly as well!

With Learning2Fly, you had the option of taking two classes. Someone had mentioned trying the Yoga class on Sunday afternoons. Intrigued to see this new view of yoga, I signed up for my second class the following Sunday. Once again, I found myself in the brightly colored room that had every color of the rainbow and then some! It’s fun just standing in such a happy colored room.

Having a new found love of yoga I will admit that I enjoyed the freedom that the silk ribbons gave my body as I did the positions that were given. Your spine truly felt longer as you sat upside safely and securely in the ribbons. The instructor even told us that she has grown 1/2 inch since she started teaching! We did familiar poses and poses specifically designed with the use of the silk ribbons. Some felt good. Some I struggled with. However, I was able to do much more in this class. So if you’re lacking in the upper body strength like I am, then I suggest doing the yoga class a couple of times first. It was easier on the body and self-esteem personally.

Aerial Workouts New Trend in Kansas City

August 6, 2015 | KSHB41 –

It’s the new trend in working out.

And it doesn’t require lifting weights or running on the treadmill.

All you have to do — is fly.

“It’s like Pilates in the air, weight training in the air, it’s yoga in the air, it’s everything, one workout. I was just amazed and I knew that I had to bring it to Kansas City,” said Sumya Anani, the owner of a Mission, Kansas gym called Learning2Fly.

After a long career in the boxing world, Anani opened the gym about five years ago.

Using so-called “silks” gym goers can lift themselves into the air, then depending on their skill level, perform various aerial fitness routines.

In 2010 pop star Pink brought this type of aerial skill to public attention, with a memorable performance at the Grammy Awards.

“She’s an amazing athlete,” said Anani. “She really brought a lot of notoriety to silks and people are like oh where do I do that,” said Anani.

Soon after Pink’s performance, “silks” were popping up in more gyms across the country.

For Andrea Andrews and her daughters it’s a fun and challenging activity. Andrea enjoys it so much she started teaching classes at Learning2Fly.

“They have to be patient with themselves,” said Andrews of her students. “Know that it may not come naturally but they have to build that practice and persistence and that patience.”

Learning2Fly offers classes for people of various skill levels. There are also classes specifically for children.

Said Anani, “I think what really brings people back is the fun of it. It’s not like oh I have to go work out, it’s oh I get to go workout!”

A workout — that gives you wings

Learning2Fly: A Chakra Circus of Health Summer Camps

sumya_chakrasummerKids and parents both come and go with happy, smiling faces at Learning2Fly.  ‘A Chakra Circus of Health’ summer camps  are the perfect antidote for curious minds and energetic bodies.  Parents love the educational aspect of the seven habits of health we teach kids.  Kids love that they have fun while they’re learning.  One thing for sure – there is never a dull moment in our 4-day camp.  many campers come back week after week, summer after summer, because each week is different.  It’s a joy for us to see returning students and families.

Parents love ‘A Chakra Circus of Health’ camps because we reinforce these seven important and vital habits of health.

Habit #1 – Nutrition.

A healthy body needs healthy food to thrive.  But how many times can a child hear their parent tell them to eat their vegetables?  So our teachers at Learning2Fly help reinforce those early nutrition habits so they’ll be set for life. Food is medicine after all.

Habit #2 –  Exercise.

Movement is life, so we are committed to inspiring kids to develop a lifelong love of exercise.  Kids will hula hoop, hike, climb aerial silks, practice yoga and other creative forms of movement.  We want kids to have an expanded appreciation for their bodies and help them cultivate a lifelong love for taking care of it.

Habit #3 – Learning & Self-Confidence.

We want children to be inspired to love learning.  The world is an amazing place and there is so much to learn, see, and understand.  Kids will learn different crafts, and develop their individual sense of self-esteem as they try new things.  Staying open minded is the key to learning.  We nurture a sense of being curious.  (And they’ll learn the ancient circus secret too.)

Habit #4 – Environment.

We all have to do our part to save the planet, so in this habit of health, kids will learn about our amazing ecosystem.  We teach the concepts of reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink what we are doing that affects the health of the seas, the air, and the forests.  This land is yours and mine.  We can work collectively to take care of it.

Habit #5 – Family & Community.

It is proven that the stronger our social ties, the stronger our immune systems. We need each other to thrive.  We’ll talk about ways to get along with others, how to develop friendships, nurture relationships with families.  Our relationships feed our spirit in many ways.  Kids will also learn the positive impacts of volunteering in the community to make a difference helping others.

Habit #6 – Global Awareness.

Kids learn about other cultures around the world.  We truly live in a global village, and seeing how others help us have a better quality of life helps us develop a sense of gratitude for all people and cultures.  It’s a small, beautiful and diverse world after all.

Habit #7 – Spirituality.

Spirituality can be practiced at any age.  Children can also infuse their day with the principles of love and peace by being nice to kids at school, doing their chores without being asked, saying thank you, and using manners at the dinner table.  These are fundamental ways  kids can practice spirituality.  Their spiritual muscles will get stronger everyday too.

Each habit of health is taught in fun ways to kids.  They don’t even realize they are learning because it’s so much fun!  Parents appreciate we are reinforcing the things kids are learning at home.  We are proud and grateful that ‘A Chakra Circus of Health’ summer camps are up and running for the 6th year.  Thank you to all the local parents and kiddos for making that happen.  We hope to meet you this summer.
